Component by component-Siemens Energy prioritises flexibility and modularity when fitting out its production workshops. This is why the company opted to use more than 2500 fixtures and fittings from item when redesigning its plant in Berlin.

The company offers a wide range of products, solutions and services for generating, transmitting and storing electrical energy. Its latest generation of switchgear is manufactured at the company’s Berlin-Spandau site. Siemens Energy has used more than 2500 item solutions to expand and redesign its workshops.

Top-quality conversion

Siemens Energy has modernised the production lines at its Berlin site to boost the efficiency and flexibility of its manufacturing operations. The key requirements were as follows:

Plain designs with no eye-catching colours (to prevent distractions)
High level of flexibility so that production processes can be modified quickly
Ergonomic work benches that can be adjusted to suit each employee
Easy assembly and disassembly for smooth workflows

The solution-flexibility and savings

For its modernisation project, Siemens Energy opted for item components-including aluminium profiles and Profiles KH-for more than 2500 fixtures and fittings. These item components were used in custom-designed work benches, racks and transport trolleys. One particular highlight is a special fixture that was built for the preassembly of cable harnesses. The solution has reduced walking routes for staff, resulting in a 40% saving in working time. What’s more, this preassembly improves ergonomics in the workplace significantly. The modularity of item components gives Siemens Energy the flexibility it needs to adapt its production lines to suit new requirements and, at the same time, substantially reduce its material and energy costs.

Sustainability at Siemens Energy-with support from item

Standardisation and sustainability are key priorities at Siemens Energy-and the company has similar expectations of its partners, too. At its Berlin plant, the company produces high-voltage switchgear that will be insulated using chemically pure air instead of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) in the future. This change will reduce environmental pollution and ensure compliance with strict sustainability criteria. In another step towards sustainability, up to 75% of the item components installed can be reused. This means that many of the same materials can be redeployed when production lines are modified.
